About Musculoskeletal Health Partners Pre-Med & Pre-PA Internship

Our mission is to offer Interns a comprehensive and enriching experience that prepares them for their future careers in healthcare. We provide hands-on exposure to the operations of an active medical practice, allowing Interns to engage directly with real-world scenarios that enhance their clinical and administrative knowledge. Additionally, we offer tailored support and mentorship to help them navigate the competitive application process for medical and physician assistant (PA) schools. Beyond acceptance into these programs, we focus on fostering the skills, confidence, and professional insight necessary for building long-term, successful careers in the health sector.

Internship Overview

At SDNeurosurgery (SDN) and South Bay Neurosurgery (SBNS), we welcome students from all academic years. However, we strongly prefer those in their final year or penultimate year of school. This preference stems from the following reasons:

  • Many schools grant academic credit exclusively to upperclassmen.

  • Academic credits are often limited, and using them in your final years maximizes the opportunity to secure a full-time paid position with us.

  • Students in their final years or gap years are typically more informed of their goals in healthcare and understand what they wish to learn and gain from this internship.

We understand the value of our investment in training pre-medical and pre-PA students and are committed to fostering long-term professional relationships with our Interns.

Opportunities for Students Without Academic Credit

For students who have exhausted their academic credit or choose not to apply for it, we offer two alternative pathways:

1. Research Department

Work on ongoing research papers, such as case reports and projects, with a focus on papers and presentations involving minimal patient interaction. Participate in team activities and collaborate on specific tasks and initiatives.

2. Medical Assistant Training Program

The program is a nine-month paid training opportunity, costing $250 per month. Participants develop competencies similar to those of interns, including assisting with clinical tasks, patient care, and documentation. In addition, the program includes regular exams to assess knowledge and skills, and upon successful completion, participants earn a medical assistant training certificate, enhancing their qualifications for future roles in the healthcare field.

Internship Expectations

As an Intern, you will be expected to:

  • Fully immerse yourself in the daily operations of the practice.

  • Adapt to a dynamic environment with minimal supervision.

  • Perform substantial clerical work and provide exceptional customer service.

  • Travel, as required, between multiple clinic locations.

Training and Performance

  • Ongoing training will be provided, but you must demonstrate independence and quick thinking.

  • You will master the 15 core competencies essential for incoming medical students.

  • Internships are performance-based, with evaluations at 3, 6, and 9 months to determine continuation or termination.

  • Letters of recommendation are reserved for exceptional interns who pursue a Staff position; completing the internship solely for a recommendation is discouraged.

Workload

Part-time Interns

Minimum of 15 hours per week.

Full-time Interns

Minimum of 40 hours per week.

Requirements

To succeed in this Internship, you must:

  • Demonstrate professionalism, responsibility, and respect in all tasks.

  • Be punctual, HIPAA compliant, and adhere to Practice policies.

  • Attend all training sessions and complete assigned work promptly.

  • Think critically by analyzing, questioning, and applying logic.

  • Always be ready to learn and demonstrate improvement.

Pathway to Leadership: Gap Year Leads and Letters of Recommendation

We welcome outstanding interns who choose to take a gap year to step into leadership roles within our practices. These individuals will undergo a rigorous interview and application process to be selected as Leads, ensuring they demonstrate the dedication and excellence required for the position. Letters of recommendation will be granted exclusively to those who commit to a gap year, reflecting their deeper engagement and contribution to our work. As such, our Internship is fully committed to supporting our Leads in securing placements in medical and PA schools, providing them with the mentorship, experience, and resources necessary for success.

Outcomes

This Internship goes beyond shadowing and requires a commitment to high standards of performance and professionalism. By the end of the internship, you will gain confidence and expertise for medical school applications, acquire practical knowledge and personal growth to excel in interviews and personal statements, and be well-prepared to meet the demands of a medical career.

Internship Overview

At SDNeurosurgery (SDN) and South Bay Neurosurgery (SBNS), we work with all students of any year, although we strongly prefer students in their last year or last two years of school. This is because many schools will allow academic credits for upperclassmen only or will allow only a certain number of academic credits such that it would be best to use them with us in your last year or so. This will increase your odds of getting a paid full-time position with us. We are also looking for students who have matured and are more serious about medical school. Moreover, we also will consider students who are going to take gap years over those who will not. This is because we invest so much into training pre-medical and pre-PA students; we want opportunity to have these people come and work with us in our Practices.

For those of you who have run out of academic credit or do not want to use up your academic credit, you can join our Research Department without applying for academic credit. Without academic credit, however, you will be limited in patient interactions and will work mostly on papers and presentations.  Nevertheless, you will be able to interact with us and participate in a limited fashion. Ask for further details.

Lastly, if you must be part of our Practice without academic credit because you have run out of academic credit or you don’t want to apply for academic credit, you can join our medical assistant nine-month training program. In this program, you will do everything the Interns do but will also have to take exams and get a medical assistant training certificate at the end. Furthermore, this is a paid program, and you will pay $250/month.

Doctor with a stethoscope in hand

SDN/SBNS are neurosurgical practices specializing in the surgical care of the brain and spine. Our goal is to provide our Interns with real-life experience working in an active medical practice. We help our Interns who become Staff get into medical schools and physician assistant schools and start their own health-related careers. As an SDN/SBNS Intern, you will be expected to immerse yourself fully in the daily workings of the practice. As an Intern you may work outside of normal working hours to meet the demands of a practice that is by its nature very fluid. This can involve considerable changes day-to-day with scheduling, meetings, and tasks. We will provide you with constant training, but you will be expected to perform and execute without supervision and be able to think well on your feet. If an unstructured environment without clearly defined roles and boundaries is difficult for you, then this Internship is not right for you. The Internship requires a tremendous amount of clerical work, demanding customer service, and possibly a lot of travel as there are multiple clinics in various locations.

At the end of your time with us, you will have acquired a breadth of experience, knowledge, confidence, and personal growth that will help you with your medical school application process. Our goal is to help you gain the confidence and expertise to do well in your interviews and personal statements and, ultimately, to get you accepted into a medical school. During your time with us, you will practice and master the 15 core competencies required of incoming medical students. For this reason, it is imperative that you dive deep into the practices so that you can be well-prepared for medical school.

Our Internship program goes beyond volunteering at a hospital or passively shadowing a physician. We will give you many responsibilities and have high expectations of you to do well, including showing up punctually and doing meticulous professional work. If you apply yourself, you will come to love working in the Internship. If you do not get to this point after 3 months or 6 months, and certainly by 9 months, you should not continue with the Internship or pursue a Staff position. You should not do an Internship if your goal is just to get a letter of recommendation. Letters of recommendation will be given to only a few, and if you do not join us as a Staff member, you will likely not get a letter of recommendation. You will be evaluated at different points in time, and we will continue or terminate your tenure based on your performance.

The workload for part-time Interns is at least 15 hours a week. For full-time Interns, it is 40 hours a week. We will assign you to a department where the Department Leads will supervise and train you. You must show up for work on time, attend all training, and complete all work assigned to you in a timely manner. You must be professional, respectful, responsible, and HIPAA compliant. You must not put the Practice in jeopardy in any way. We expect you to make mistakes, but we also want you to learn from them and strive to do better for yourself and the Practice.
